Editing Services
Greetings!
I’m Janna Trombold, MD, a retired internal medicine physician. I assume JJ Renek as my pen name when I create fiction.
But here, I’m letting you know about the medical editing services I offer to fiction writers. Authenticity is what we seek in our writing, and that is what I bring to the table.
~ Caution: Don’t Commit Medical Malpractice! ~
Do you plan to include medical scenes in your narrative? Often such scenarios will greatly affect your plot trajectory or further character development. Don’t write yourself into a corner with a character / patient and not know what the heck to do with them! And consulting the internet for your medical information gives you variable content – how do you use that? – and it does not provide medical judgment nor wisdom. That is where the art of medicine and experience come into play. Setting the right course early will save you much time and trouble as you complete your draft.
So, if you need a medical consultation for your story, please email me with your specific request, your genre, manuscript length, and your contact information. I ask that you put medical edit in the subject line to spare your message from the spam black hole.
I’ll respond within three (3) days to set a time to discuss your work. The initial phone conversation usually runs less than thirty minutes and is free.
When we agree on the scope of your project, the following occurs:
- I’ll give you my estimated time requirement. My fee is $100. per hour. The edit will begin when 50% payment is received. Balance is due upon completion.
- You’ll need to electronically submit the necessary materials within one week of our scheduled start date.
- I’ll furnish a summary report regarding the pertinent manuscript segments with suggested changes / revisions.
- We’ll schedule a follow-up phone or Facetime discussion to review my recommendations and the reasons for those suggestions.
Questions for your consideration –
- Do I need a developmental medical consult before I wade too deep into clinical scenarios? What situations should I avoid?
- Do I want to know about a single medical situation I may include in my narrative?
- Do I have questions about appropriate medical lingo?
- Do I need a medical review and edit of an entire completed manuscript?
Get in touch, and we’ll discuss. See my Contact page for the email form. I look forward to hearing from you!
Note: As you may expect, manuscript consultations are not intended to provide opinion or recommendations for yours or others’ personal medical conditions.
